Installing drivers in xubuntu for a radeon hd 6770

These are the steps I took to get AMD’s proprietary drivers installed for a Radeon HD 6770 in xubuntu 14.04. Disclaimer, though, I tried a bunch of things, so this might not be in order.

  1. Install fglrx: sudo apt-get install fglrx
  2. Download the AMD drivers here: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Linux+x86
  3. Unzip and run the script as root: sudo ./amd-driver-installer-14.501.1003-x86.x86_64.run
  4. Choose to build packages for Trusty Tahr.
  5. Configure xorg.conf: sudo aticonfig –initial
  6. Reboot.
  7. fglrxinfo should now report the correct drivers:display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
OpenGL version string: 4.3.12798 Compatibility Profile Context 13.35.1005

I got some help from this link: http://askubuntu.com/questions/558520/cannot-install-new-omega-driver-from-amd
